Hin und Wieder
2025
Hin und Wieder (Once in a while) follows the path of sunlight through the front windows of the Sayner Hütte, a former metallurgical plant in Bendorf, Germany. Coal records the shadow movements, and a solar-powered sound piece is played when the solar panels are exposed to sunlight. The sound composition is based on fragments of the Lux Aeterna chant from the Graduale Romanum (1974, p. 676, Liturgia defunctorum). The chant reflects the building’s east–west orientation and its Gothic-inspired structure—industrial, yet shaped like a church. The work connects light, sound, and material to explore the rhythm of the day and the memory of the site. It examines how past and present, nature and architecture, continue to shape one another.
